Well, hashtags work in certain third party clients, but not in the official one and not in ALT tags at all, so I'm not sure why anyone would use them in the first place.

there’s feeds that use them and they’re handy for searchability even if each #word doesn’t serve as a linked hashtag image in alt text is searchable too so i think some people are hiding their search terms in there
