I'd disagree that interests are not aligned! – Publishers may not act fast, because they are trying to find a scalable, sustainable, standardised solution (and legal action will get authors nowhere). There's a lot of activity and different approaches, implemented rn: C2PA, TDMrep (W3C), ISCC (ISO).

Some are - the UK publisher's association is trying to have the government prioritise IP rights protection in how it treats AI (and the govt is basically saying 'no'). and some are developing contract terms so they can own an author's 'style' and have AI write the books instead. a mixed picture
