This historically happened at cons before is the most frustrating part. It's revisionism to say "it's a cosplay prop so it's aye okay!" cause any nerd con back to when I started visiting in 2006 had a "Don't wave guns around at people" rule. Cons hate when cops get called on them over this behavior.
There's a failure of conventions to uphold even basic safety rules right now and no action is not an option. In freaking 2008, I went to a con where a Joker cosplayer was banned for drawing his fake knives on random people and excusing it as in character. It didn't fly then, doesn't now.
There's never been a anything goes policy. You could not point guns at people, can't even have them drawn unless it was an obviously anime prop or were at an aside away from major crowds having a photo shoot. I cosplayed Deathstroke with shitty plastic cap guns. I was firmly reminded of the rules.
I've been going to need cons for 16 years? Back when the popular opinion was "SJW is cringe!" and before ever considering trans people or safe spaces. We never had a tolerance for guns like people in favor of the mime argue and it's a failing of the con that he's not banned yet.
There's room to talk about exceptions but it needs to be acknowledged that's not an excuse out of having the discussion. We need to talk about the different political landscape now and we need to talk about bad actors arguing for an alternate history that never was.

More isolated sure, but weird? The people who chose to leave a platform that demanded every person read Elon's posts at the top of their feed at all times are the weird ones? I'd argue the weird ones are people who are so set in their ways that no line is ever too far to change what website you use.
