Unpopular opinion, but I dislike Patriot Day September 11 has nothing to do with patriotism. No first responders were thinking "oh wow I love my country" as they rushed in to the towers to try to save people A day of remembrance & service, absolutely But lose me with a false veneer of patriotism
Yeah we don’t do that with Dec 7th A certain sunset of America can’t be respectful and introspective anymore. They insist that the only two acceptable feelings for Americans are dominant confidence and rage aim at reasserting dominance
Wait, as a native Massachusettan, "Patriots Day" has always been the 3rd Monday in April. When did 9/11 become Patriot Day?
There does seem to be a false veneer of "patriotism" on 9/11, but perhaps it's an opportunity to separate nationalism from patriotism. Perhaps self-sacrifice for others is patriotism. Helping neighbors, other Americans, humans even when there is a cost to oneself (& on 9/11 great cost) is patriotic
It's less patriotism and more nationalism at this point. The country took a hard right when it happened, and the whole mentality of fighting back against a wrong unleashed a martyr complex that helped to usher in someone like Trump.
But it's how we got The Patriot Act, which gave us the Dept of Homeland Security, police depts armed like armies, OK for the IRS to see what library books you read, warrantless monitoring of citizens, and all things uhMerIhKhen. Celebrate!
They actually named it patriot day? Guess it's kind of apt since it led to the patriot act...
Clearly they're trying to commemorate the resultant landmark legislation by the same name, which began our long, slow march to full-on state fascism. 🙃
I treasure the Patriots’ Day celebrated by Massholes and other New Englanders on the third Monday in April, to commemorate the battles of Lexington, Concord, and Menotomy. Celebrated as the founders intended by the Boston Marathon, a Sox Game and a long weekend just as the weather gets nice.
Same, same. It always has struck me as cheesy and shallow and manipulative and missing the whole damn point. But, it fits on a bumper sticker, and apparently that's what is required. Meaning be damned.
I was OK with the National Day of Service thing, despite being voluntold to go do community service while in the Navy. I do agree with your Patriot Day sentiment.
