Just learned from it that one of the founders of the DAR sought solace in the Revolution as a “good” war to try to deal with/block out the Mexican American War which killed her father… and that’s unlocking some feels for me about why I get so invested in history…

Trying to find bits of US history that match up to my ideals of what the US SHOULD be rather than what it has been, and is. And whoo boy, I wasn’t ready for that kind of existential reckoning this evening, as I grapple with my own war (Afghanistan) and its meaning.

Fascinating. Some of my greats (now all long deceased) were active DRT and I've always wondered what the attraction was. Now I wonder how much of it was an attempt at moral cosplay, esp. post "war of northern aggression." They were not good people and grappling with that is hard.
