I'll accept "cult in rural area" as folk horror if the mumbo jumbo is sufficiently pagan in nature instead of clearly 70s Satanic or Lovecraftian (though there is overlap there)

Actually that gets to another (minor) pet peeve of mine, horror conflating "pagan" and "satanic" when the former is much richer and more interesting to me. Not saying you CAN'T have pagan god be The Devil but try to think outside the box , y'know? Don't need to do the Puritan's work for them
