I've recently added "What does it mean to 'do math'?" to my first-day-of-class discussion topics. It's made for very enjoyable conversations!
The Pac-10/12 schools may not have gotten along 100% of the time, but we were a *family*, dammit. (And we all hated U$C more than each other anyway.)
I don't know which "team" I'm on, but this (boundedness of elliptic curve ranks) is the rare question in math where not only do we not have a proof, not only do we not know the answer, but *people firmly believe different things*. So progress toward one or the other is really exciting!
