Black Maternal Mortality Is More Than Twice the National Average The US has dramatically higher maternal mortality rates than other high-income countries. The disparity is especially stark for Black women in the US, who had a maternal mortality rate more than twice the national average in 2020. Black women are more likely than white women to die from postpartum cardiomyopathy and preeclampsia/ eclampsia, and the disparities in mortality for pregnant Black women transcend socioeconomic factors such as education level and income. Structural racism in the U.S. health care system contributes to the gap in maternal mortality between Black women and their white peers, as the primary causes for Black women's mortality during pregnancy and childbirth are treatable and preventable. ... Black women's maternal mortality risk "is not the result implicit bias of one health care provider, but a systemic problem that requires upstream intervention and solutions.
