This seems so weird I know I'm ~25 years out of high school but I distinctly remember covering at least one entire book a year every year of high school English and possibly starting earlier IIRC Freshman year it was Brave New World and Romeo & Juliet that took up a great deal of the time

Some of my students have read books in high school. I think lots of students do. But I also think that for some, reading books is less common or less emphasized than it was. This is anecdotal. It’s not something I’ve researched.
