Imagine mapping this evolution from 1500 to today, in some kind of comprehensible fashion. The mind groans at the task ;-)
This is going to trigger my rant about how the map of exchange is vastly more complicated AND beneficial than the map of allegiance; and when they conflict, exchange should dominate and expand, redirect, or ideally eliminate allegiance, rather than allegiance trying to do the same to exchange.
