They’re comparing it to The Purge first off due to recency bias, and second off due to the character of the violence. While those events are real, The Purge has a specific American Christian Conservative ethos to it’s violence, that is reflective and inspired by MAGA violence.

I understand why. I argue it's more the recency bias thing than anything like comparable vibes. But the problem with comparing a real political figure's real desire for state-sponsored violence with a fictional film is it downplays the idea that such violence could happen in reality.
