i worked at Publix (popular grocery store in the southeast US) & not only did we have to throw out entire rotisserie chickens, fried chicken, meats & cheeses, & dozens of fresh sub rolls, we also had to CRUSH it. which is fucking EVIL. how much do you have to hate poor people to require that?

the food shelves by us have been severely reduced in both number and services, it turns out the stuff you'd usually find at a food shelf is being *SOLD* at discount food places here. i literally just bought something that's a year expired by accident from one of those places A YEAR

i used to make take & bake pizza as a teenager and had to throw mistakes in the trash 100% it was just they didn't want us to eat free pizza i made myself "oops" pizzas with whatever toppings *I* wanted for dinner, remade the order correctly + took the "trash" home because i made ~$7 an hour

In the 80s, they required me to lock the dumpster full of perfectly good sandwiches at Jack in the Box. I would routinely forget to do this part of the job

They still insist on dairy pouring out milk after sell by date. My husband hates that part of the job. Wasteful and smelly.

Many years ago I worked 3 jobs to survive, 1 of which was Starbucks. I could understand why they wouldn't let us workers ("partners") take left-over food home, but the fact we had to destroy and dispose of SO. MUCH. FOOD. broke me. I understand Starbucks does better nowadays but that stuck.

That’s a god damn travesty…publix chicken and subs are soooooo tasty. Trashing that is like spitting in god’s face!

Publix has its own PAC and only donates to conservatives like DeSantis. So yeah, why not be a total asshole company and throw out food for people who could use it?

I dunno my friend's dad owned a bakery and they just bagged up all the left over bread for a local food shelter to pick up each night it was really easy and probably saved him on waste management costs in the long run, honestly.

god forbid the homeless get anything edible to eat
