re the common enemy thing, it's notable that the US has never felt itself a pariah state because we were a main partner in constructing the shared illusion of international law from the state (pirates to petrostates, baby) but there's a real chance we could risk that status under Trump.

The Democratic papers did go on about how Lincoln's warmup for Everett's address made anyone embarrassed to explain to foreigners this was in fact the POTUS

it's not even about which side right, it's savvy cynicism about how strategy is being "perceived" and how that perception helps/hurts each side, as if the media has no role whatsoever in how the strategies and policies are being perceived by the public
