Ah yeah, what Apple folks call "swizzling" and Windows folks call "detours", and everyone else calls "function hooking"
Back in the day in MS-DOS we called it a TSR; usually it would hook into an interrupt, check for something like keypress and then return control to previous interrupt handler.
