Notice that each time the analysis is "what's happening with young men", "what are those young men not getting from Dems to win their votes back". And sure, yes, not great. But the articles keep getting it backwards. That gap (mostly) isn't men going right. It's mostly young /women/ going /left/

Would it be more accurate to characterize it as young women resisting the shift in the Overton? It always rubbed me the wrong way to frame restoring abortion rights, maintaining environmental protections, returning to a more progressive tax structure, reinstating assault weapon bans as “going left”

I think it’s worth asking why young men aren’t voting in their own best interest, but that’s more of a them problem than a Democratic problem.

Gotta push back on this - young men are following the Republican Party as IT goes rightward. The result here of “same amount identifying Republican” needs to be combined with the rightward lurch of the party to be properly understood because the “middle” or baseline has moved.

So neat when you realize that the “paper of record” is asking a question (why young men not go left?) that is literally answered in the fact that they frame it that way rather than looking at the group that’s actually moving

Like, take this, from NYT/Siena Aug. 2024 battleground polls in a bunch of swing states. The story of this graph isn't young men being abnormally pro-R vs other men in other age groups. (Tho, aside: sigh, men wtf, do better). The story of that graph is young /women/ in the top-left

Support for Harris and Trump by age and gender
Age 18-29: Women D+40, Men, R+13
Age 30-44: Women: D+20, Men: R+13
Age 45-64: Women: D+5, Men: R+18
Age 65+: Women: D+23, Men: R+12

Fascinating side-note: in S. Korea the reverse is happening alarmingly fast, where men actually are swinging right hard

Yep, the framing of this as young men swinging right seems very dishonest. Especially on the basis of very flimsy and erratic polling data.

It's much more, like, revealing that there's an authoritarian core of men in society, who are the internal threat to the rest of us, and they are not morally evolving with the rest of society. They're not going right, they're what the remaining authoritarians look like as more people evolve.

The agenda is "everything should be tailored to men, history's greatest victims" and they're not going stray from that over some pesky little thing like facts. If the gap doesn't indicate men are being horribly abused by the evil dems/progress, then the gap itself is horrible abuse upon men.
