As an exvangelical? It's in part to create bonds within the church and to emphasize that if you LEAVE, then you have to deal with the SCARY OUTSIDE WORLD, and the church is the ONLY PLACE SAFE FOR YOU. And also because if they aren't victims, they have to acknowledge their oppressive behavior.
