September 29 1996, The Nintendo 64 debuted in the Americas WITH Super Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64! The N64 was originally to be called the Ultra 64, but Konami owned the trademark for "Ultra Games", ironically because Nintendo limited 3rd party NES game production years before! Happy Birthday N64!

I think this was the only time where I was an early adopter of a console. If memory serves me right I got my N64 for Christmas that year.

Just pulled my 10th star in a replay of Super Mario 64 to commemorate the anniversary.

Is the “Ultra Games” issue confirmed? I thought that was just a rumor for why the name changed.
