As John Holdren once said about climate change, “We basically have three choices: mitigation, adaptation and suffering. We’re going to do some of each. The question is what the mix is going to be. The more mitigation we do, the less adaptation will be required and the less suffering there will be.”

To be clear; "adaption" comprises a major reduction of the size of global population, at the very leat, no more growth. Hopefully. Otherwise, the same thing would fall under the category of "suffering".

I've been thinking about accountability lately. We should hold those who are most guilty of our situation accountable. There are people who have committed crimes against humanity by actively sabotaging progress in climate change mitigation.

We won't understand the value for money of the mitigation until we're suffering.

We’re already doing a lot of suffering. Not as much mitigation or adaptation.

Thank you! From now on, whenever technocrats and technocrats-in-training ask me dreary questions about "policy mixes" I am going to refer them to Holdren's quote, calling it "response mixes".
