During the peak of bird fall migration in North America, an estimated 4 billion birds will navigate built environments as they travel southward to their wintering grounds. Millions of birds will not arrive at their destination due to a fatal collision with a building. You can help ensure these birds survive their journey! Join us for Global Bird Rescue (GBR) from September 23 - 29, 2024, an annual event hosted by FLAP Canada designed to raise awareness about bird-building collisions and to inspire home and workplace bird-safe retrofits across the globe.

It's baby bird season again! Here's one of my oldest comics, a chart about what to do if you find a baby songbird out of the nest. People seem to find it helpful. I'm also sharing photos of baby birds I've seen.

A chart defining what to do if you find a baby songbird out of the nest. If it is visibly injured or a cat got at it, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife care canter. These vary by location; an internet search can help. If not, if it has closed eyes, you have a hatchling. It's very young. Return it to the nest, and if you can't find a nest, make a nest from a basket and dried grass and wire it firmly to a tree. If its eyes are open and its feathers are few and in tube-like sheaths, you have a nestling, and the instructions are the same as for a hatchling. If it is feathered and awkwardly hops or flutters with a short tail and wings, you have a fledgling. If it's in immediate danger, move it carefully to a safer spot nearby. If it isn't, do not intervene! This is a natural, awkward step and the bird needs privacy. If your bird has many sharp teeth and a large claw on the second toe, you have a dromaeosaur. If it has seen you, back away slowly and do not show fear.

It's migration season for birds and other wildlife. You can help them by: - LIGHTS OUT at night - Keep CATS INSIDE (or in an enclosure/leashed) - Add bird safe decals or deterrents to reflective windows abcbirds.org/glass-collis...#birds

A chestnut sided warbler poses on a budding branch against a background of muted spring green. The bird has a bright yellow cap, black mask, black-white-and-yellow striped wings, and a white chest with a bold, chestnut colored stripe.
