Finally, not much attention is given to the decline of turnout in fed. elections, despite compulsory voting. In 2024, ca. 13% did not vote. It seems increasingly clear to citizens that they don’t face penalties for not voting, causing a gradual but consistent decline in turnout.

While changes have been limited overall, that does not mean government formation will be easy. The fragmentation of the party system is still very high, with 9.4 effective parties in the federal parliament.

This contrasts with the situation in the Walloon region, where the liberals and les engagés (formerly cdH) won, more than compensating for the loss of that other ‘traditional’ party, the PS. Again, the political landscape looks quite different in different parts of the country
