What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders? Indexes in books are written by actual humans and cannot be done automatically by computers

Indexing is the *darkest* sorcery there is for layout artists and publishers. I did it a couple of times. I still have PTSD from it (Publishing Traumatic Stress Delusion).

I did this once, for my uncle's book! It was actually really interesting to do.
