I used to think the pirate phrase “shiver me timbers” meant “there are sharks surrounding my boat” until I learned “shiver” could also mean “breaking apart”. So “shiver me timbers” either means there are sharks around my boat, or my boat is breaking apart. Now I’m not sure. Any ideas?
