WOMAN OF THE HOUR: Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut about is a tight, rousing thriller about the real-life “Dating Show Killer” from the 70s. The non-linear structure may be scattered throughout, but it’s well-crafted ingenuity proves Kendrick can be more than an actor overall. A solid gem.
I hate having a sore foot for days now. Feeling the sense of pain is so discomforting.
SATURDAY NIGHT: It may not be entirely accurate but Jason Reitman's dramatization of the 90 minutes leading up to SNL's first airing is a chaotically engaging real-time dramedy. Finely shot on 16mm & fascinatingly well-edited, plus with a lively script & a terrific ensemble, it's a riveting delight.
IT'S WHAT'S INSIDE: Greg Jardin's debut feature is a genre-bending take on the body-swap narrative focusing on late millennials feeling insecure about their lasting friendships/relationships. More of a fun mystery/thriller than horror. A bit disjointed at times in an otherwise solid genre film.
JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX - On paper, turning a sequel into a musical sounds intriguing. Except…it’s not. It’s excruciatingly incompetent on almost every level (even the musical numbers are lousy). The last half-hour will leave fans of the first film utterly livid. Folie à deux…more like “adieu, le fou”.
THE WILD ROBOT: DreamWorks’ latest is a beautifully dazzling animated film about a robot learning to coexist with the natural world. Incredibly heartwarming & emotionally moving with a solid voice cast led by Lupita Nyong’o & an epic score from Kris Bowers, it’s destined to touch families everywhere
