The level of executive function required to access the medication I need to *help my executive function*....
I had very different relationships with that book at different points in my pregnancy. And I saw midwives! A lot of my pregnancy was medicalized in ways that were less than ideal, but I was incredibly grateful to have access to high quality specialty care when we needed it
And perhaps not unsurprisingly, it so demonized medical intervention and enabled eugenic thinking that it gave aid and comfort to the anti-vaxx movement, turning vulnerable birthing people against vaccines that kids desperately need.
It also dovetailed very handily with eugenic narratives about how "good" bodies don't need assistance and bodies that need medical assistance (including abortion) are necessarily flawed and aberrant and perhaps meant not to survive. Which also aided forced birthers.
Is birth over medicalized in problematic (+misogynistic+racist) ways? Yes. Is wandering off to an organic off-the-grid farm to have your "orgasmic" birth despite warning signs of preeclampsia the answer? No. Probably not
This must be happening in San Diego. Do similar data/analyses exist here?
Oooh, thank you!
So true!
