The rise of the far right is based far more in backlash to social progress than anything else. But the idea that it's a new problem caused by foreign interference seems incredibly appealing to a lot of people.

I think the broad acceptance of foreign interference by the far-right is a somewhat new phenomenon. Conservatives welcome donations from Russia (via oligarchs) because—in their desperation to fight social progress—they’ve decided the “ends justify the means.”
