When I was in my Japanese classes I would use as much kanji as I could in my regular casual texting, and my tutor pointed out that sometimes it was weirder to use it than to use hiragana, especially in frequent phrases.

It’s probably more that common phrases are often written in hiragana, while more complex words that can be misconstrued as other things use kanji. If it’s a kanji kids might not know they’ll write the hiragana next to it.
