Agreed. But they're also not providing easily found background information so the reader can judge whether the person isn't just rationalizing her choice, i.e., not wanting the interviewer to know she's got views that could be considered racist.

If this person were a politician, or an expert, wouldn't you think the reporter would be remiss if they didn't give us background to show the reader where they were coming from?

You're missing my point. Everyone is rationalizing their choices. Including people who agree with you.
