To be clear, if Trump was actually able to deport 25 million people, that could in theory reduce housing demand. But in addition to being a crime against humanity, it would crank up inflation and decimate our already scarce construction labor supply.
Rents down 10%, but unemployment up to 20% from demand destruction
Not to mention what it would do to the price of bacon, the source of all MAGA energy.
especially if it was combined, as they promise, with huge tariffs on imported goods
Surprise: Deporting millions of people is unimaginably expensive bsky.app/profile/jdrc...
The cost of Trump's mass deportation plan: a whopping $481B
The former president has promised to expel millions of undocumented immigrants, but data indicates that the operation would have a devastating impact on the economy
It would also cost $481B. This would require money be budgeted for it, which - assuming the Dems keep at least 1 chamber of Congress - is a dead story. Not that we want to rely on that backstopIt would also cost $481B. This would require money be budgeted for it, which - assuming the Dems keep at least 1 chamber of Congress - is a dead story. As a general rule, "bring down housing costs by reducing demand" is a bad strategy because it forces you to do things that are immoral and has horrible social and economic consequences for the places you're trying to help.
And who will do this deportation work with no taxes to pay for it - volunteers?
Do folks not know who grows our food (for shit wages)?
I'm not even very sure about that. American's don't want to live in the crappy apartments and trashed urban homes where immigrants live 6 to a bedroom. They want fresh new homes and apartments in the suburbs. And who is going to build them with no more immigrant labor?
They're basically just saying "we're going to decrease the size of the economy by 7.5%". Guess what, folks, that's a depression.
