Yeah UI work is my favorite kind of work to do as a programmer / designer because it really IS the bones of what the game is (for strategy games particularly) but it's high up there on the list of things where players have NO IDEA how much work and complexity is behind it all.
I didn't appreciate designing UI when I first started and wanted to do the fun things like concept art only. Now I started a position where UI design is my main focus and it will definetely change how I see it in games.
AFFINITY DESIGNER? Man respect for the hustle. I could never get it to work for me, I'm just too stuck in the nicensss of Figma shortcuts UX and AD doesn't click with me no matter how much time I spend with it.
Playing echoes of wisdom is a good reminder about how much bad UI can bring down an otherwise good game. People never notice UI/UX when it’s working well!
Sad truth is with UI/UX is the better you do, the less any one notices. Good ui is seamless and friction free so fades away in peoples minds.
