I'd literally never have got that and have never completed a cryptic crossword largely because they always make me want to hurt the compiler very badly on account of being a big thicko.

While crossword fans aren't keen to dispel the myth that only very clever people can do cryptic crosswords, it is just a learned skill. If you don't do cryptic crosswords because you can't do cryptic crosswords then that will remain the case.
