But when we considered solar PV in our analysis, the financial case for heat pumps grows very significantly. PV plus heat pumps which offer cooling are a particularly cost-effective combo compared to gas, even without any subsidy.
Even with subsidy support, lifetime costs of heat pumps in Spain are higher than gas. The picture is more balanced however when we consider cooling.
Grants can be difficult to access and vary around the country and funding is unreliable. There is only support for certain types of systems and household access to capital can be limited. Electricity is subject to very significant levies an taxes leading to high running costs.
