There was a ppaer a couple of years ago looking at pre- and post- Cultural Revolution family outcomes in China. The authors argue there was a persistence of something we might call "class values" despite the revolution, resulting in income variances long after. www.nber.org/papers/w27053

You have to be in the game to understand the game... Isn't that what it (and this!) always was? Apart from perhaps a brief window of innocence (in the network, and in every new user), and among some people who haven't clocked that Reddit, WhatsApp and RSS readers do the key jobs much better?

There's a fairly widespread belief that public service is about SACRIFICE. In education and health, it means accepting damage to your mental and physical wellbeing; in politics, a series of purity tests that imply anything is a potential grift. It's appalling.

This all seems a lot clearer if you think of Elon Musk as Cave Johnson. I mean, no less apocalyptic, but a lot easier to understand.

Oof. Everyone's focused on cancelled fixtures and huge costs (perhaps £1m!) due to the flooded River Wandle at Plough Lane. But the AFC Wimbledon Foundation uses the site for loads of community work (see link) that will have to relocate. Can you donate a small sum? www.justgiving.com/campaign/plo...

And I love "a varied cognitive diet doesn't include picking things off the street." Social media is like an infinite multi-cultural, multi-outlet food-court. It's dominated by junk food outlets and sweet shops. There is nutrition, but only if you look carefully; the rest will damage your health.

Unfollow Project really was ahead of its time. The project folder includes variants on D-squared's beef and a host of other dissatisfactions. The lessons are mine from 2019. I was taken, though, with his line about the Town Square failure. Thing is, it was a *terrible* metaphor from the beginning.
