This is very reminiscent of something from Hitchhiker’s Guide

I can see Ponder Stibbons and Rincewind sneaking out of the Unseen University to go to the Mended Drum and commiserate with each other over how much sense the universe doesn't make. Stibbons could be Rincewind's protege except that he's probably allergic to running.

I know exactly how he feels.

i have said that if Terry had stuck around long enough to write a Discworld novel skewering crypto Ponder would be the one who would accidentally tell Hex to invent it, and he would spend the rest of the book being very sorry about it

Poor Ponder, but frankly, I'd take an "out of cheese error" over most of what modern computing serves up.
