I don't know that TikTok is to blame by itself. Before that, it was Tumblr. And before that, it was MySpace. And before that, it was Livejournal. The 2000s were riddled with glorifying ADHD and depression to be quirky and cool to your emo friends.

i meant it more as a shorthand, but you’re right, point well taken. it’s probably more accurate to say tiktok is the apotheosis of this trend, given it’s scale/reach and extremely active integration into people’s daily life.
