Hopfield is a straight-up physicist. Hinton less so but the guy used statistical mechanics to do it.

In this case I feel strongly that physics may have been their tool. But the Nobel prize surely isn't handed out based on profession (if I wrote an amazing book I'd hope I'd win in literature, not physics).
