We don't let public works take home snow plows for their weekend side gigs. Our firefighters have to leave the fire trucks at the station once they punch out. So why does MPD get to use city squad cars and taxpayer funded liability insurance when they pick up off-duty work? 🧵
The full council next considers whether to study what it costs the city to allow police officers to use squad cars and other city resources to work security on the side.
The short answer is: because of Bob Kroll and the police union. Very glad that a spotlight is being shone on this issue.
It is not like it is in lieu of a handsome pension, you know so they can retire in dignity. They have high salaries, usually two or more great pensions, and impunity from many violent crimes. Sure, let taxpayers pay their car insurance too. Maybe taxpayers can give them mansions?

Yesterday our Administration and Enterprise Oversight (AEO) Committee approved a study by myself and @elliottpayne.bsky.social to recommend fees to recoup the cost of allowing MPD to use squad cars and other city resources to work for private businesses when they’re off duty.
