When I was at UNCC, we worked for 10 years on a proposal for a Women's & Gender Studies major bc we had *600+ minors*. The proposal got all the way to the Board of Governors for the UNC System, & they tabled it indefinitely as a way to kill it. The students WANTED that major.
What's the career path for that major? What jobs would it have prepared students for?
Thanks for posting this! Will share w colleagues to think through strategizing around what's to come.
Y'all should've buried the funding in the football budget: They didn't have any problem fast-tracking that IIRC.
UNC great institution who is bogged down with a terrible and old board of governors. They are fighting social progress and will continue as long as the numbers are made. Great professors are either suppressed or skipped for tenor. They want progressive money without any progress.
I was a WGST minor at UNCC and remember a few years back how excited we all were at the prospect of it becoming a major! I was hoping to double major in that and English and graduate with two bachelor’s. I couldn’t believe when it didn’t go through despite the number of students in the program.
My aunt was involved in this (on the side of supporting the major). I believe this and other frustrations like it were a major driving force in her taking retirement.
