Fun little diffraction prism effect from a CD on my desk getting lit-up by the Sun. You can see the "ribbon" of sunlight responsible on the bottom left. #photography

A spray of rainbow colours eminates up from an area of the wall lit up by a sunbeam. Most of the rest of the wall is dark, untouched by the rays bouncing of the CD or coming from the Sun.

Discussions of the tokenization aspects suggests that is pretty much what is happening... That said, I've not seen a discussion that answers things in a way that I feel is precise. Sounds like chatgpt 🤪

Be safe! Hope most of the way is on dedicated bike paths.

Delighted to share an interview with Fraser Smith and myself speaking to Dr Cherif Matta of MSVU about our research and the relationship between astronomy and society. It was a lot of fun to do, and covers quite a few mindbending issues! www.youtube.com/watch?v=lipA...

Couldn't help but try the strawberry thing on chatgpt. Very curious how it tries to find an argument for why it comes up with two rather than three.

chatgpt text interaction where it attempts to argue that the reason strawberry only has two rs (it doesn't of course) is that one of them is removed when straw and berry are combined together.

Quartz is piezoelectric (materials that produce electric fields in response to stress), so this is really quite plausible.

If you've ever wondered how the huge nuggets of gold get formed (they can be 150lbs!), here's a really new and amazing piece of research: it may be electrochemical deposition (much like plating) due to quartz veins being compressed during earthquakes! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Quartz emits a piezoelectric charge during deformation that may promote the formation of gold nuggets within veins in orogenic settings that experience earthquakes, according to a study using quartz d...

Dazzling dahlia filled with drops of the overnight rain. #photography

Circles of red petals move inward from the edge. In the centre the wrapping of the petals creates pools of water that reflect the sky. In the very centre fresh growth in green stands out against the stark red.

And warning sent. I genuinely think they will not respond until VISA intervenes...

Anyone thinking "what about your students?" Trust me, they are fine and are better served by presenting their research at conferences. Indeed, super stoked that my PhD student Fraser just got a great reception for his work on ergodicity in star formation at the McMaster SF conference. 🙌
