Anthropologists have noted for over a century the similarities between string figures across the world. Our methods allow the unambiguous DNA-like sequencing of string figures, which helps identify recurring structures. And so, it helps spot patterns of cultural transmission (and innovation).
We discuss these transmission signals at length, also noting some globally recurring patterns that may signal shared ancestry. We note how string figures, as algorithmic/topological objects, may have been precursors to mathematical thinking and spurred the evolution of other string technologies.
