SOAPBOX TIME I hate how many times I read things like "nobody cares about the world" and "humanity is the virus" and "our species is too inept/evil/selfish to survive" online. I almost never see anyone talking about the many, many people who are doing incredibly hard, complex, good work
It's not that "nobody cares." Rich people don't care. They don't want anyone or anything to prevent them from doing exactly what they want, all the time, with no consequence.
And when something good gets mentioned, people bemoan and wail about how it isn't enough. OK, but if *more* people or groups did that one "small" thing... (And I don't mean in a "personal responsibility!" way, I mean things like local litter picking groups. They make a difference to their area.)
I will posit that because the people out doing the good things have started to avoid social forums, because it seem that no matter how much good they do, there's always a crowd telling them they're not doing enough - and that wears on you. Or they claim virtue signaling, which is a worse claim.
About 25 years ago I said "humans are the plague" to someone, maybe a relative, and they pushed back on it, and I've reflected on that ever since: And of course I still recall that moment, including right now, reading your thread. So thankyou. Followed!
It’s adolescent nihilism even when it’s coming out of the mouths of 30 year olds
Because the bad news sells and people are addicted to rage and gloom.

Is there a playbook for how the Kremlin spreads disinformation when it’s at the center of a global outcry? We have found three tactics that it has used again and again: Spreading confusion, with massive amounts of misleading information. The aim appears to be to muddy the waters for those who want to know more. Turn the allegations around. Rather than defend itself, it shifts the focus through attacks, bold responses of strength, and disinformation. The Kremlin's spokespeople also tend to attack opposing views – moving the focus away from the allegations themselves. They like to imply or point out that the West is just as bad as it accuses Russia of being. This narrative can be found scattered through different pro-Kremlin sites, often with misleading information. Then I log off, and run into, say, someone who provides occupational therapy for disadvantaged factory workers. Or someone whose job is to produce citywide heat maps that lead to regulations that cool specific areas. Or someone who scrutinizes health care in mental health settings. Or or or
I can understand how it may SEEM like nobody cares. What gets missed is the need to have infinite spirit (or be a bit of a masochist) to withstand trying to do shit for any length of time. There's little talk about how crushing it is to care, moreso to TRY to change, only for the needle to move 0%
