I don’t really like these little mottos. They tend to add to misunderstandings and the people that use them are often rather awful. E.g., they love to bash people then use such a motto. On face value, these are fairly reasonable explanations for some behaviors.

The important thing is to realize how complicated people are. Some people who reject your criticisms may not ‘lack self-knowledge.’ They may simply have different values, and your values may not be better than theirs. So the criticism may be pointless imposition and even an attempt to dominate them
