The whole "you complete me" sounds romantic until you realize it's a terrible start to a relationship. Relationships should compliment the existing you, not "complete" you. That being said, I don't think it's as simple as "not happy with self = not happy in relationship."
There IS the intense joy of receiving at your door an unexpected package ordered by a spouse with no memory of having made the late night purchase. Tantalizing. That's a special kind of fulfillment.
