It's never going to make sense to me that people are chill with risking their lives to avoid weird looks from people at Walmart instead of just wearing a face mask
The trick is to wear a mask which is both functional and so overtly weird that any look you receive is INVITED rather than feared.
The thing that kind of kills me is that a significant number of these people call themselves “free thinking rationalists” who “aren’t sheep,” when their entire reasoning process for not masking is driven by reflexive normalcy seeking and wanting to blend in instead of logically mitigating risk.
the benefits of autism: they already look at me weird even without a mask🤷 may as well not accidentally kill another human being even if I no longer care whether I live or die
Jokes on them I already got weird looks.
no one here wears masks anymore at all and i’ve been wondering “is this normal?” “should we not be wearing them still???”
the heavy sigh I just heaved counts as remembering to take a deep breath
They don't think they are risking their (or their loved ones) lives. That's the sad thing.
I get invited to networking events all the time and I don’t want to be the one “weirdo still wearing a mask” so I don’t go. I’m on immunosuppressants and don’t have a choice, and there’s no way to avoid the social consequences of it. I hate it.
I noticed a few months ago that an increasing number of staffers at the WM by my work were masking up again. Good for them.
I pretty much treat it like the Flu. It's never going away and paid time off when sick is a rare luxury so not many are going to stay home when sick. Knowing that, if there is an outbreak in an area... getting sick is more inconvenient than risk mitigation methods.
