Nice to know that submitting LaTeX files will *not* keep the Journal of Phonetics typesetters from absolutely massacring phonetic transcriptions. What a beautiful mix of random spaces, random font shifts, misplaced diacritics, and a bit of added italics, just for kicks

Yes, this happened to me the last time I submitted there. Luckily the language I was discussing wasn't nearly as complex to transcribe. It happens with many publishers in my experience. I think that it would just be easier if journals told us exactly what format will not involve an IPA massacre.
