Afaik the Netherlands did shift to community service and open prisons as punishment more often, which allegedly reduced repeat offences and cut costs. But that article seems to be a bit too rose coloured.

Eduardo Mizubuti shows some really interesting findings that P. Infestans populations from Tomato in Brazil are forming a new, unique subpopulation, different from all potato population and from those from the last decades. Affecting even how they grow on plate. #7ITDS#TomatoDisease

This is a fairly shocking recent preprint on estimated global expenditure on article processing charges (APCs). Six publishers (Elsevier, Frontiers, MDPI, PLOS, Springer Nature, and Wiley) received $2.5 billion in APCs in 2023. arxiv.org/abs/2407.16551
