They have to keep up with the Joneses otherwise they risk getting swallowed by a competitor. It's capitalism 101. The idea that a private oil company would give up oil always has been a fantasy, as is the 'energy transition'. 'Renewables' just add to the total energy mix, they don't replace FFs.

Although it's a nice thought, do you mean brief in geological time? Each ppm of atmospheric CO2 signifies 7.8 gigatons, so that's ~550gt removal to get down to 350ppm. How do you think this can be done briefly?
