This is what will eventually kill AI use for most tasks in universities, btw. It'll destroy all their sustainability metrics and awards. Which management/marketing love. Indeed if you work at a uni toying with it, this is the line of attack to take.
AI alone means Google's GHG emissions have gone up by 50% since 2019. This is abhorrent, and in my view is a good enough reason to shut down all generative AI altogether. It's an obscene use of our remaining carbon budget. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
The tech giant says it will be difficult to meet its net zero target due to AI using so much energy.
Thank you for sharing this. It's so wild to see their circular rhetoric when it comes to tech & sustainability. I'd argued for 'nutrition labels' on AI to showcase the true cost... FWIW here's a piece I wrote about a year ago on this very topic: amodernremedy.com/do-the-envir...
All that artificial thinking requires a lot of juice.
Yes, mainly through my company, we make ongoing financial contributions to several environmental regeneration projects, and aim to support at least one NGO/NFP per year on a pro bono basis. Always looking to do more!
An interesting proposition. This would also depend on the 'age' we are talking about. Modern humanity, with all our plastic bells and whistles? I'm not so sure our presence is needed in every corner of the globe.
Thank you for these insightful facts & figures. Will definitely be sharing!
RE choosing to invest in one or the other: Hopefully more stakeholders see these factors as less of a moderator (in terms of resource investment) but that solutions that speak to *both* are amplifiers for positive & impactful outcomes.
It's ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ to build in public. ๐ฑ But what better way to learn, grow and be as transparent as possible? I hope you'll join us on this journey. And as always, I'm here for your feedback - because nothing is perfect, and there is always room to learn. ๐
I'm onboard with the circular economy, but circular logic? Not so much. AI is indeed the answer... to fast-racking our climate crisis. What about "nutrition labels" that illuminate how much energy is required for every query or generative junk that AI produces?
