"They don't let their disability stop them" is not helpful, kind, nor a compliment; it celebrates only exceptional disabled ppl, implicitly judging those who aren't. Disability can stop one, no matter how strong/determined, as can inaccessibility, systemic discrimination, and societal prejudices.
im high achieving and when ppl tell me im badass or fierce or whatever i really just wish theyd go away or pay me cuz im so tired i dont wanna make nobody smile i just want rest
This. I am stopped. I live in constant pain and suffering. I spend a lot of time in my head just to disconnect from it for a bit. I cannot live a normal life. Stop expecting me to do normal things.
Yeah, inaccessibility and prejudice HAVE stopped me but it's not my fault.
One of my doctors talks about a favorite patients "She is always smiling" It just pisses me off.
It individualises a structural process bigger than any of us can shape.
Man yeah my disabilities stop me ALL THE TIME
Would be nice if you could praise a disabled person for being exceptional without some rando saying "what about the ones who didnt do that?" I'm proud of my sister for being on track to graduate HS despite being illiterate due to autism. Someone else didn't? Well it's not about them now is it? 😑
I really hate the “plucky disabled person” trope
