Going to a state college (basically for free) changed my entire life, man. If we let these schools die we are consigning millions of people to a terrible loss.
Oddly, they don't lay off any executives, or even middle-managers. A long-ago satire about Ronald Reagan re U of California concluded that the U would work so much better if it didn't have those pesky students to teach. Now the profs are the pesky ones.

IMHO, finances are just an excuse. Our New Oligarchic Overlords think that educating everybody was a mistake.

It's akin to the loss of historical memory about infectious disease. Kids are not dying or disabled from measles et al. so vaccines are now Bad. Using intellectual capital of folks to solve problems is the norm, so people can't recognize how an internal brain drain will damage us.
