on the one hand I do feel like, pre-Elon, a big-ish Twitter account was a decently effective way to influence politics and policy discussions. on the other the actual experience fuckin sucked a lot of the time

Oh absolutely, and it didn’t always have to be a big-ish one. I caused a congressional investigation into airport food processing with 3k followers! I think that kind of influence is still happening, but in different places and complaining about it is more being mad you’re stuck in the old place.
